← Play Fivefold Gomoku

Gomoku opening strategy

Version 1.0 · Updated 31 July 2026. Strong opening play preserves several directions while reducing the opponent's forcing choices.

Use central space

Central intersections offer four line directions and more room at both ends. Edge play can be useful for a concrete tactic, but it gives away possible extensions.

Prefer forcing moves

A move that creates an open four forces an immediate answer. Before extending a quiet line, check whether either player can win now or create a two-ended four.

Defend the shape, not one stone

When blocking, choose the endpoint that also interrupts a crossing line. A passive block that leaves a second threat often loses one move later.

Plan for the active rule

Freestyle rewards connected mass because an overline wins. Exact Five sometimes requires leaving a gap or choosing a crossing direction so that a future line stays exactly five.
